3-strand twisted nylon is known for its elasticity and tremendous shock absorbing qualities. When new, nylon ropes can stretch up to 35% of their length before break. Stretch characteristics will reduce relative to the amount of use and can lose 10% of its tensile strength when wet. It has good abrasion resistance, is rot proof, resists oil, gasoline, and most chemicals. It has good resistance to UV rays. Nylon will last 4-5 times longer than natural fibers. Polypropylene is a lightweight and strong general purpose rope. It is rot proof and unaffected by water, oil, gasoline, and most chemicals. Polypropylene floats yet it is twice as strong as manila. Manila rope is made from natural abaca fiber and has some advantages over synthetic fibers. It is not affected by heat, and has an excellent resistance to the sun’s UV rays. Manila rope has low stretch and good abrasion resistance, but poor chemical resistance, and is subject to rot. Ideal for a low cost general purpose rope.
